{"id":7792,"date":"2022-12-27T08:00:02","date_gmt":"2022-12-27T07:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cocotine.com\/?p=7792"},"modified":"2022-12-27T09:38:37","modified_gmt":"2022-12-27T08:38:37","slug":"cocotine-end-of-caged-eggs-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cocotine.com\/en\/blog\/market\/cocotine-end-of-caged-eggs-in-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"France vs Europe: animal welfare labels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the impact of food on health and the ecology, animal welfare is a growing concern for consumers. 94% of Europeans consider that it is important to \u2018<\/span><b>protect the welfare of animals bred or kept for farming purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 and almost half consider that \u2018the <\/span><b>choice of animal welfare friendly foods<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in shops and supermarkets is <\/span><b>currently insufficient<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This figure has increased in relation to the previous study of 2007. To meet these expectations and provide a framework for practices, several <\/span><b>labels dedicated to animal welfare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have emerged in line with precise specifications. Public authorities are also considering <\/span><b>harmonising labelling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Animal welfare: what does the European legislation say?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, the European regulations are based on the \u2018<\/span><b>five freedoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019of animal welfare:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freedom from hunger and thirst;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freedom from discomfort;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freedom from pain, injury and disease;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freedom to express normal behaviour;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freedom from fear and distress.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European legislation has been addressing the issue since the 1970s, with the \u2018European Convention for the protection of animals kept for farming purposes\u2019. This was used as a basis for the \u2018Directive concerning the protection of animals kept for farming purposes\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adopted in 1998. Some regulations are specific to certain species. For example for laying hens, Directive 1999\/74\/EC (applied in 2002) made the installation of perches compulsory, defined the minimum size of feeders and drinking bowls, and established a maximum stocking density, amongst others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Labels at the service of consumers and diners<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labels have been created in each country. They are very often initiated by the voluntary sector and provide more assurance that animal welfare is being taken into account than legislation alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By way of example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F\u00fcr Mehr Tierschutz: a German label with two levels (silver and gold) promoted by Deutsche Tierschutzbund (German association for the protection of animals)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSPCA Assured: a UK label implemented by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c9tiquette bien-\u00eatre animal (animal welfare label): a French label comprising five levels (from E to A) and resulting from an approach involving associations, farmers&#8217; and processors&#8217; organisations and actors involved in distribution.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How will things develop in the future?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developed by the European Commission, the \u2018farm to fork\u2019 strategy aims to make agriculture more sustainable and includes a component on animal welfare. The creation of a <\/span><b>European label or labelling system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is being studied to this end. The objective would be to provide consumers with transparent information on the conditions under which animals are reared, transported and slaughtered. This development would seek to simplify the legislation and provide clear, precise and consistent standards so that their implementation would be homogeneous in all Member States and easy to understand for farmers and the relevant sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While animal welfare labels are generally promoted by associations, future measures and regulations could make labelling compulsory in all EU Member States.
